MTN Rwandacell PLC (MTN Rwanda) today resumed its Y’ello Care employee volunteering programme after two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year MTN Rwanda staff will be involved in a number of activities at the Agahozo Shalom Youth Village, home to orphans of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The theme of the year “Empowering Communities to Drive Economic Recovery”, which is linked to MTN’s strategic priority to build digital skills for digital jobs aligned to the company’s Ambition 2025 Strategy, will be focused on upskilling local communities in order to drive economic activity through digital skills training and job creation.
Under this programme, MTN Rwanda staff will be conducting various ICT trainings which include Python Programming, Educational resilience, and Real-World practices at Agahozo Shalon Youth Village. This youthful community will also receive a computer lab donation of 15 computers bundled with six-month internet connection. In addition to this, MTN staff will provide mentorship programs and participate in community work alongside the students.
“The COVID-19 pandemic illustrated the urgent need for digital skills and the empowerment of our youth in those areas to ensure they are well versed and equipped for tomorrow. We are pleased to be doing our part in contributing to this since, globally, digital skills are a requirement, and they propel individuals for economic development. With information technology being embedded in everyday life, it’s imperative that no one should be left behind,” said MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer, Mitwa Ng’ambi.
Since its inception 15 years ago, the annual event aims to secure high participation levels of MTN staff in high impact social projects to uplift and empower the local communities in which the company operates.
“At MTN, our strategy is rooted in brightening lives through the provision of leading connectivity solutions and driving financial inclusion on the backdrop of sustainability, but we know that this is not enough. We need to do more by actively participating in activities that allow our staff to serve the communities around us,” commented MTN Rwanda General Manager, Corporate Service and Company Secretary, Sharon Mazimhaka.
MTN Rwanda is committed to adding economic value by contributing to society through its programmes focused on digital education, digital skills, and digital skills training. The company believes that reducing the digital skills gap will help address issues of digital and social inequalities.
