U2opia Mobile Partners With MTN in Rwanda to Enrich Millions of Lives with Sponsored Data

  • Makes data affordable and accessible for end consumers and provides additional data for free
  • Provides a compelling tool for marketers to reach out to new users and retain users

KIGALI, 15 December 2015: In an effort to take the Internet to the people and to provide its subscriber base with an enriched mobile experience, MTN Rwanda has launched a sponsored data service in partnership with mobile solutions provider U2opia Mobile. Powered by Fonepass, U2opia Mobile’s sponsored data platform is meant for subscribers with limited or no access to the internet, enabling them to explore the world of data and unlock its value at no cost for them.

An open marketing platform, Fonepass will allow customers to access their favorite mobile applications with no data charges and also encourage them to try out new applications. The service can be accessed by logging on to mtn.fonepass.mobi.

The offer by MTN allows subscribers to find free data offerings on various and most popular utility apps. The platform enables users to access information on Wikipedia, stay connected on Binu, browse food options from Hello food, get safer motorcycle taxis from Safemoto, get travel advisory tips from Tripadvisor and unlock knowledge and opportunities with limited access to educational material on Library for all. Once users logs on, they can choose the app they want to access and start engaging and get rewarded for their usage.

“With Internet access and smartphones now becoming more accessible in the Rwandan market, consumers now have access to literacy apps, utility apps, consumer centric services and the convenience of eCommerce that have been long enjoyed in developed markets. We are sure this partnership with U2opia mobile will enable us to roll out more services to our subscriber base and help customers enjoy services while we enrich their lives. This is an exciting new opportunity for us and most importantly, our customers,” said Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Rwanda, Yvonne Manzi Makolo.

Mobile engagement is accelerating globally, as social platforms, app developers, and marketers pay increasing attention to the rapidly growing smartphone base and growing economy in the region. According to a recent report, internet subscribers in Rwanda as of September 2014 numbered slightly over 2 million, an estimated 25% of the mobile user base.

Talking about the solution, Sandeep Ganguly, CEO, U2opia Mobile said, “Information is the key to education and empowerment. We are working with MTN and the Local Global Application providers to ease the access to data via our patented Fonepass solution. U2opia would like MTN mobile consumers to try this new service from their operator and start using data services.

Fonepass aims to provide a means to making mobile data more affordable, accessible and enables operators and content providers, alike, to capture the revenue they are missing out that this usage could deliver. The solution is also a win-win for consumers as it rewards them with free data packs for using apps while they use more data and enjoy a richer mobile engagement. We are happy to partner with MTN in Rwanda and look forward to taking the internet to the people and enriching their experiences. We are sure that the masses will benefit from the solution.”

Providing data via Sponsored Data service gives companies an effective way to reach consumers and expand engagement in the growing, mobile-centric landscape. U2opia Mobile’s Sponsored Data service, Fonepass, available to use for millions of smart phone users, gives them access to more mobile data through sponsorships and enables MTN to give its subscribers more value while monetizing its mobile data network. Content providers and other businesses can use this innovative network solution with existing mobile websites and applications.
