KIGALI, 15 December 2015: In an effort to take the Internet to the people and to provide its subscriber base with an enriched mobile experience, MTN Rwanda has launched a sponsored data service in partnership with mobile solutions provider U2opia Mobile. Powered by Fonepass, U2opia Mobile’s sponsored data platform is meant for subscribers with limited or no access to the internet, enabling them to explore the world of data and unlock its value at no cost for them.
An open marketing platform, Fonepass will allow customers to access their favorite mobile applications with no data charges and also encourage them to try out new applications. The service can be accessed by logging on to mtn.fonepass.mobi.
The offer by MTN allows subscribers to find free data offerings on various and most popular utility apps. The platform enables users to access information on Wikipedia, stay connected on Binu, browse food options from Hello food, get safer motorcycle taxis from Safemoto, get travel advisory tips from Tripadvisor and unlock knowledge and opportunities with limited access to educational material on Library for all. Once users logs on, they can choose the app they want to access and start engaging and get rewarded for their usage.

Mobile engagement is accelerating globally, as social platforms, app developers, and marketers pay increasing attention to the rapidly growing smartphone base and growing economy in the region. According to a recent report, internet subscribers in Rwanda as of September 2014 numbered slightly over 2 million, an estimated 25% of the mobile user base.
