MTN & Mobisol partner in school electrification Campaign
Kigali – Mobisol has joined mobile network operator MTN in their 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign that began on June 1st, to electrify eight rural Rwandan schools with no prior access to electricity in the districts of Gicumbi, Ngoma, Kamonyi, Nyagatare, Gakenke, Nyaruguru, Nyabihu and Nyamasheke.
As in previous years, the Y’ello Care programme will benefit communities that are disadvantaged by focusing on sustainable ICT initiatives through the provision of relevant educational equipment and skills mentoring. Between 1 and 10 June 2015, eight high-quality and sustainably managed and maintained Mobisol Solar School Systems will have been installed.
Yvonne Mubiligi, MTN’s Corporate Affairs Manager said, “We seek to support the Rwandan Government in enabling off-grid rural electrification efforts with innovative off-grid lighting solutions. Many of these rural schools have no power for lighting, computers, printers and access to internet. Without lighting they have very limited reading and studying times, they cannot learn computer skills, without internet they are cut off from a world of free teaching tools and resources and without printers it is very difficult for teachers to create critical educational materials. In partnering with Mobisol to provide solar systems to schools, we believe that this will produce productive citizens able to compete in the already hi-tech global market.”
The customized 600Wp Solar School Systems come with all necessary components to illuminate and power the schools – including wiring, efficient and bright LEDs, mobile phone charging, solar lanterns, TVs and radios. They can be utilized for educational purposes, training and informing students on sustainability, renewable energies and general electronic features and developments. Using the practical example of their own solar system, children get a more hands-on introduction to renewable energy and basic ideas of climate change, solar energy and sustainability. In this way, both teachers and children are more likely to share their knowledge and sensitize their wider community about renewable energies and environmental protection.
Additionally, the lighting of the buildings enables the institutions to open their doors for the wider community after nightfall and to provide students, teachers and people from the surrounding communities with an opportunity to study, gather and jointly use the school facilities during the evening and night hours. Furthermore, laptops can be operated, providing students with the opportunity to acquire IT skills that are increasingly important in Rwanda’s service-oriented economy. Students can learn how to use the Internet to access informational channels and navigate virtually in an increasingly interconnected world.
Dario Simbizi, EU Project Manager at Mobisol said, "Mobisol is very happy to bring smiles to the faces of thousands of children and teenagers around the country whose educational opportunities will be visibly raised through their school’s sustainable electrification. This additional support for the educational sector also goes in line with the Rwandan Government’s target to provide 22% of the country’s electricity with off-grid means. "
As part of MTN’s secondary campaign and in line with the company’s vision “To lead the delivery of a bold, new Digital World to customers”, employees will also install and provision digital books in rural schools across the country, train students and teachers in rural areas on how to access the eBooks, how to download and use the eBooks effectively in teaching and learning. In collaboration with the Rwanda Ministry of Education and Rwanda Education Board, MTN will also conduct a teacher training programme on the new national education curriculum and ICT skills knowledge.
