MTN Rwanda sponsors students to the tune of Rwf13.8 million

MTN Rwanda today issued a cheque worth Rwf 13.8 million to sponsor students in Kigali City that have dropped out of school due to lack of funds.

The cheque was received by the Mayor of Kigali, His Worship Fidele Ndayisaba at the City of Kigali Offices in Nyarugenge.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, MTN’s Chief Financial Officer, Ms Peris Kahuko, re-emphasised the organisation's commitment to the development of education and its continuous support for projects and events aimed at improving learning.

“We’re committed to supporting the education of children in our communities in a significant way,” explained Ms Kahuko. “Such sponsorships are geared toward keeping children in school and on track towards graduation and beyond because a solid education is the way to a better quality of life.”

This handover comes just a few days before MTN’s annual employee volunteer programme called 21 Days of Y’ello Care where MTN employees actively contribute to community development under the theme of Investing in Education for All. The programme is aimed at garnering more awareness about the need to invest in education for all Rwandans.

His Worship Fidele Ndayisaba applauded MTN for its contribution to the development of education in the city and the country at large.

“Today we celebrate the good cooperation the City of Kigali has with MTN in line with our mandate to educate the children of this country and city. Inclusive education is one of the key pillars of our Millennium Development Goals and it is Rwanda’s national vision to have a knowledge based society.”

Over the years, through MTN’s CSR vehicle called MTN Foundation, MTN has succeeded in implementing several projects, including the construction of infrastructure, renovations, the fight against Malaria, skills development and ICT capacity building in schools.

“This isn't the first time we have joined hands with MTN to touching the lives of Rwandans in a positive manner. We worked together to contribute to the rescue of the victims of the disaster we had where people lost homes due to wind and heavy rains. Other activities include enhancing the connectivity of the city under the Smart Kigali agenda which has taken shape and has been received positively by Rwandans,” concluded His Worship Ndayisaba.

Education is one of MTN’s core CSR priorities as provided under the MTN Foundation. By focusing on education, MTN hopes to impact the lives of millions of families and sustainably transform their future by opening them up to the world of opportunities that education offers.
