MTN Rwanda injects Rwf53 Million into Kigali Peace Marathon

MTN Rwanda together with the Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) on Wednesday, 6th May, announced the launch of the 11th edition of the annual Kigali International Peace Marathon, slated for Sunday May 24th 2015.

Speaking at the press conference held at the MTN Headquarters in Nyarutarama, MTN Chief Marketing Officer Yvonne Manzi Makolo revealed that MTN will once again be the official sponsor of the Kigali International Peace Marathon and urged people to participate in and support one of Rwanda’s top sporting event.

“As the official sponsor of the Kigali Peace Marathon, MTN is thrilled to collaborate with the Rwandan Athletics Federation once again to show our support of one of Rwanda’s pre-eminent sporting events. It is fantastic to see it grow year on year not only as a great community event, but an international one as well. The race very clearly resonates with MTN’s commitment of making our customers’ lives a whole lot brighter as we are able to not only contribute to our local community, but also contribute to the growth of sport in Rwanda,” she said.

According to Thomas Kajuga, Vice President of the Rwanda Athletics Federation, the theme this year will be “Run for peace beyond borders.” The annual event is organised to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi through peace and reconciliation.

Registration will be done primarily via MTN Mobile Money although participants can also register directly at Amahoro Stadium and online at www.kigalimarathon.org for international participants. The fee this year will be Rwf2,000 for Rwandans and Rwf20,000 for non-Rwandans. Registration closes on May 20th.

The event will include of a Family Run of 5km, the Half Marathon of 21km and the Full Marathon of 42km, with all categories starting and ending at Amahoro Stadium in Remera.

The 5km Family Run will start from the Amahoro Stadium via Tigo Service Centre in Remera, University of Rwanda (former KIE), Control Technique, Sports View Hotel and then back to Amahoro Stadium.

The 21km run will start from Amahoro Stadium via Chez Lando, Gishushu, MTN Centre Nyarutarama, Gacuriro village and back to Gishushu, Parliament, Umubano Hotel and then turn back to Gishushu, Gisementi, Tigo Service Centre in Remera, University of Rwanda (former KIE), Control Technique, Sports View Hotel and ending at Amahoro Stadium.

The 42km run will be the same as the 21km run but ran twice.

“We are delighted that MTN Rwanda has once again come on board as the official sponsor of the Kigali International Peace Marathon. The marathon continues to grow in popularity and with MTN’s support I am sure this will be another successful year,” Kajuga said.
