MTN Rwanda hands over Rwf 8,250,000 to support School Drop Outs

Students’ attendance is set to improve in Bugesera District following MTN Rwanda’s contribution of Rwf8,250,000 to support school dropouts due to lack of funds. The handover ceremony that took place today at Bugesera District Office is part of MTN’s on-going commitment to invest in education for all.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Mayor of Bugesera District, Louis Rwagaju, commended MTN for providing more children with the opportunity to attend school.
“I wish to acknowledge the tremendous strides MTN Rwanda has made in improving and investing in access to education for Rwandans. When such companies leverage their resources to support initiatives like this, our entire society benefits,” he said.
In 2014, MTN staff contributed over US$30 000 to support underprivileged pupils and also supported 20 schools during its annual 21 Days of Y’ello care. This activity saw schools receive desks, books and playground equipment for childhood development and saw over 500 learners and 200 teachers in high schools benefit from ICT training offered by MTN staff in collaboration with the Rwanda Education Board.
“We want those who dropped out due to lack of fees and other challenges to get back to school,” said Mary Asiimwe, MTN’s General Manager for Human Resources and Corporate Affairs. “Making a difference in the lives of these school dropouts is critical to the success of our youth and our nation’s future. Our long-term goal is to build partnerships between schools, the Government and MTN to raise the level of education and obtain education for all.”
Over the years, through MTN’s CSR vehicle called MTN Foundation, the Company has succeeded in implementing several projects, including the construction of infrastructure, renovations, the fight against Malaria, skills development and ICT capacity building in schools.
