MTN launches Data Campaign to promote Internet usage

Kigali – Rwanda’s leading Telecoms Company, MTN, has taken another step in leading the delivery of a bold, new Digital World with the launch of a new thematic Internet campaign “Oh, the things you’ll learn” positioned to showcase how important the Internet is for communicating, discovering and learning.

According to MTN’s general manager of MTN Business, Norman Munyampundu, the new Internet campaign is aimed at creating awareness on MTN internet packages, educating subscribers on the benefits and opportunities that the internet offers while showcasing MTN’s digital value offerings.
“The internet is an essential part of our everyday life. As a user, one wants constant and affordable supply of internet so as to sufficiently communicate to loved ones, study and work efficiently and get updated with local and international events. This new thematic Internet campaign creates awareness for the vast opportunities available through the use of MTN Internet,” Munyampundu said.

This launch coincides with MTN’s new offer of a data access bundle called the “Social Pack” that is targeted at users of social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.
When asked about the new Social Media packs, Munyampundu said that this is another delightful and cost effective offer aimed at brightening the lives of MTN customers. “This package has been created specifically for our customers to experience and engage with us on digital platforms by keeping in mind the apps or sites that our youth use the most. This Social Pack will allow our customers to access the most popular social platforms like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp at an extremely low price.”

To activate the Social pack, customers will have to dial *349*1# on their mobile phones and follow the prompts. They can also check their balance by dialling 349#. Customers can always purchase another pack immediately their Social Pack runs out. However if they do not re-purchase a pack or attempt to access external links from Facebook or Twitter, customers will receive a notification informing them that they will be charged from their main account.

“We offer customers value for their money by providing affordable data access and voice offers that allow them to easily connect with family and friends. With the MTN Supa Pack for instance, we have now lowered the cost of calling from 100 Rwf to 50Rwf and included the option of making International calls,” he added.

The above offer is in addition to the recently launched Free Wikipedia whereby MTN customers get unlimited access to Wikipedia without any data charges. This service is to enable the millions of MTN customers in communities across Rwanda to access free information and knowledge which Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia, offers.

With more and more youngsters accessing the internet on mobile and smartphones becoming more affordable, Internet and digital services remain key drivers for growth. On the Social Media platform, MTN has demonstrated its leadership by being the Telco with the largest number of fans with over 27,000 likes. In 2013 data revenues went up by 27 per cent due to an increase in both 3G network coverage and availability of affordable internet enabled handsets.

The company has continued to focus heavily on Network roll-out and Infrastructure development as data services remain a huge contributor to revenues. The Internet campaign comes not too long after MTN pledged to spend up to the tune of US$ 20 Million in infrastructure investment following the sale of its mobile network towers to IHS Holdings in April.

“We are currently working on Network rollout and Infrastructure development to ensure that customers are able to enjoy a seamless service with both voice and data services,” Munyampundu concluded.
This strategic move is expected to improve the maintenance and output of the towers so that MTN can focus on delivering exceptional service to its clients.
